Flood Control District

The District is currently involved and co-sponsoring several flood control project areas in the County. Deer Creek/White River, and Frazier Creek projects are determining the feasibility to provide improvements to manage flood waters to reduce the periodic flood impacts to communities and rural property through which these water courses travel while also increasing groundwater recharge. On-going structural changes to the largest surface water storage dams have completed on the Terminus Dam raising the surface elevation of Lake Kaweah, and have been delayed on the Seismic Remediation of Success Dam due to budget cuts through the US Army Corps of Engineers. Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) offer flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This flood insurance is required by lenders for structures built in established Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs). New Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) were adopted for Tulare County June 16, 2009, and resulted in several thousand properties being moved into SFHAs and some out of the Flood Zones. To determine if your property is in a SFHA you can use the FEMA look-up link below. You can also print out a FIRMETTE from that site, showing your particular location to assist with any difference of opinion should your lender require you to purchase flood insurance. If you need Technical assistance or confirmation letter, please contact John Moser at (559) 624-7000. If your structure qualifies, under several criteria, a Licensed Surveyor or Engineer may be able to remove it from the flood insurance requirement by filing a Letter of Map change. See the MT-1 & MT-2 link below.

The District is anticipating application to participate in the Community Rating Service (CRS) program through NFIP. This program affords percentage reductions in the flood insurance premiums paid by each Tulare County individual insured under the NFIP.

Flood Control Commission

The Flood Control Commission was recently reactivated after a two year hiatus. The seven member Commission provides direction and maintains oversite of Flood Control District activities, and reports to the County Board of Supervisors. The Commission's monthly meeting agenda is posted below.
