Reference Assistance

Law library staff is available to guide and instruct patrons to appropriate legal materials in print or electronic format. Telephone and email reference is limited to short sections of cases, statutes or secondary sources when a specific cite is given by the caller. Staff is unable to interpret legal materials, give advice on how a law may apply to a situation, or assist in filling out legal forms.


Five Public Workstations

Contains California cases, codes, regulations, and attorney general's opinions, U.S. Supreme Court and federal court cases, U.S. codes, Shepard's citations, the Rutter Group titles, Witkin libraries, HeinOnline, CEB OnLaw, and Nolo books. Internet access available. Can print or save to disk.

Free WiFi

Access the Internet on your wireless device. Password available from the Reference desk.

Photocopiers

Two self-help copiers for 8 1/2x11" and 8 1/2x14" sheets at 20 cents per page.

Other Services And Features

Training and instruction on legal research in print and online, WESTLaw, LexisNexis, Alexandria online catalog, CEB OnLaw, office software programs, typewriters, interlibrary lending, public FAX, and conference rooms.

The Collection

A reference library only, the collection is organized by legal subject / areas of law. More than 18,000 volumes and electronic services contain:

  • California and Federal codes, statutes, administrative regulations, court opinions, and selected agency decisions, court rules, ordinances for Visalia and surrounding cities and Tulare County and surrounding counties.
  • California and Federal practice and research tools including digests, encyclopedias, form books, Shepard's, Continuing Education of the Bar and Rutter Group publications, jury verdicts, and jury instructions.
  • Law reviews and journals, law-related periodicals and newspapers, dictionaries and directories, and the Diane E. Mathis Self-Help Legal Colllection.
